What is newborn screening?

One small test. A lifetime of difference.

In the first 48 hours after birth, a simple heel-prick takes a few drops of blood that can detect over 40 serious conditions — before a single symptom appears.

The heel-prick test
A nurse takes a few drops of blood from your baby's heel. Quick, safe, and done in the first 48 hours of life.
What we look for
A single sample is tested for over 40 conditions — sickle cell, thyroid disorders and metabolic conditions invisible at birth.
Getting your results
Most results arrive within 2–4 weeks. If follow-up is needed, a nurse will reach out. Early treatment changes everything.
Why it matters

Every condition caught early
is a life changed forever.

A heel-prick blood test taken in the first 48 hours of life can detect over 40 conditions — before a single symptom appears. These are some of the conditions the campaign screens for.

Sickle Cell Disease
Nigeria carries the world's highest burden. Early detection allows prophylactic penicillin to prevent up to 90% of deaths before age 5.
Congenital Hypothyroidism
Untreated, it causes severe intellectual disability. Daily thyroid hormone costs under ₦500/month and is fully effective when started early.
G6PD Deficiency
Affects up to 22% of Nigerian newborns. Identified early, simple dietary and medication avoidance prevents haemolytic crises for life.
Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia
A life-threatening salt-wasting crisis can occur within days of birth. Screening allows immediate hormone replacement to begin.
Phenylketonuria (PKU)
Dietary intervention within weeks of birth prevents all intellectual impairment. Untreated, it causes severe cognitive decline.
Biotinidase Deficiency
Treatable with daily biotin supplements. Without early screening, it causes seizures, hearing loss and developmental delay.
